Manzanita branches are in great demand, but the high cost of shipping is often cost prohibitive for smaller quantities of the larger pieces. Often times the freight can cost several times more than the branches themselves.

We will soon be providing a delivery route from Oregon through the I-5 corridor through California to existing customers in the Los Angeles area. This means we will also be able to save you money on shipping if you are ordering from this area. This will likely be available as soon as June or July 2012.

If demand is great enough, we may also start providing this service north through Portland and Seattle.

These pictures are of different types of trees that I have available. Wood and branches of many types and sizes can be harvested for ornamental branches, wood, and many other uses. Trees are only selectively harvested from areas that are overstocked with trees. This not only prevents the harvest from harming the forests, it actually helps to make the forest more healthy by giving the remaining trees more room and resources to grow. Thinning the trees makes trees grow faster, makes the forest more disease and wildfire resistant, and enhances wildlife habitat.

Wood turner Carl Jacobson demonstrates turning a piece of manzanita burl wood on a lathe. In the video you can see how hard the manzanita wood is and how the wood looks. Manzanita wood, and especially manzanita burls, are usually not found in very large pieces for a couple reasons. First, since it is a small tree, the wood and burls don’t grow to be very large to begin with. And since the wood cracks as it dries, this makes it even more difficult to find an uncracked piece of any large size. Manzanita wood is best for making small projects like this night light. After he puts a mineral oil & paste wax finish on it, you will be able to see the beautiful grain and color of the wood. In the beginning you can see the large gaps and flaws in the manzanita burl turning blank, but then see how these imperfections in the wood only add to its character once it is finished.
